The Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development will organise a national seminar on `Organic spices and aromatic crops' here on February 1 and 2.
The seminar is being conducted in association with the Regional Centre for Organic Farming, Government of India, the Indian Institute of Spices Research, the Spices Board, the Biogreen India, and the Indian Society of Organic Agriculture.
S.M. Desalphine, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, will inaugurate the seminar. S.K. Pattanayak, Joint Secretary, National Horticulture Mission, will preside. M.L. Choudhary, Horticulture Commissioner, will deliver the keynote address.
The objective of the seminar is to provide a forum for interaction among scientists, farmers and extension workers engaged in research and development of organic spices and aromatic crops.
The seminar will also provide a platform for exchange of scientific ideas and technologies developed in various institutions for collective thought in formulating policies and programmes for the overall development of organic spices and aromatic crops.
The seminar with the theme `Organic spices for ecological sustenance' will cover topics such as technology for cultivation of organic spices and aromatic crops, policy issues, certification norms, processing, value addition, and marketing.
The crops covered include spices such as black pepper, chillies, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, tree spices, seed spices, garlic, vanilla and aromatic crops.
Introductory lectures and contributory papers will be presented during four sessions by the participating scientists.
