Moidu Haji murder case: trial begins

KOZHIKODE: The trial in the Moidu Haji murder case will start at the
Kozhikode Second Additional District and Sessions Court here on
Thursday.

The 67-year-old Moidu Haji, a sympathiser of the Indian Union Muslim
League (IUML) was killed during the political and communal
conflagration at Nadapuram in the district in 2001.

A large mob, reportedly activists of Communist Party of India
(Marxist) (CPI (M), attacked the house of Moidu Haji at Thanakkattor
in Chekyad at 12.30 p.m. on January 14, 2001 and killed him.

Retaliatory attack

The murder was said to be a sequel to the killing of a CPI (M) worker
Santosh on the previous day.

The State Government had already appointed V.P. Abdurahiman as Special
Public Prosecutor in the case. A.M. Babu is the Judge of the Second
Additional District and Sessions Court.

Charges have been framed under Section 143 (unlawful assembly), 147
(rioting), 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapons), 302 (murder), 427
(mischief causing damage), 449 (house trespass in order to commit
offence punishable with death) and 435 (mischief by fire or explosive
substances) read with 149 (guilty of offence committed with common
objective) of the Indian Penal Code against 12 CPI (M) activists.

One of the accused is absconding.

The fifth accused Surendran alias Anthiyeri Suran is now a convict
lodged at the Kannur Central Prison in connection with another murder
case.

All the other accused were out on bail.

The case was registered at the Nadapuram police station and
investigated by the Circle Inspector.

The examination of the witnesses will continue till February 8.
