Annual Fund-Raising Affair 'Spectacle' at IIMK Witnesses Enthusiastic Participation

Jotinder Singh, who might well be designing next year's Brand Strategy at Cadbury's, was busy refereeing in a strange catch-the-egg-if-you-can game, while Gaurav Kapoor who would be interning at IBM this summer was

focusing hard on catching the eggs!
On the other side, Shweta was busy
selling spicy Pani Puri, instead of credit cards at Standard Chartered, to the hordes of locals who had turned up to witness the "Spectacle" as the Annual IIMK Social Service Group Fete was organized here at IIM Kozhikode campus on February 11th.

The SSG Fete is an annual fund-raising affair, the proceeds of which would be used for providing need cum merit-based scholarships for primary school children among other social efforts. It was befitting, perhaps, that the corporate barons-to-be would get their first experience of business at an event which is in line with IIMK's philosophy of inculcating concern among future managers towards society.

In a fun-filled evening, IIMK students set up make-shift stalls to entice people into playing games like Darts and Shooting or trying their luck with dice. While the participants competed for petty prizes, stall-keepers vied with each other to ensure healthy participation, and thus, ensured that the end cause got the attention it deserved. The money spinner of the event was a raffle tickets draw which saw many waiting with bated breath to discover the results. Celine, a foreign exchange student from France, was amazed at the concept, and enthusiastically participated in the event. She recalls, "It's great to be involved in an initiative like this, the games were all great, especially the egg game, even though one of them landed in my face!!"

The SSG expects to raise over Rs. 50,000 through the event. The body was started in the year 1999 as an ad-hoc body to contribute to the relief work in the Orissa cyclone. It was registered with the government in 2001 with the objective of initiating social work activities in and around the city of Kozhikode that would have an ongoing and lasting impact. It has been involved with organizations working in health and education including the local unit of Palliative Care Society.
