KOZHIKODE: Transforming into a flower bed, ‘Calicut Flower Show 2007’, an annual event being organised by the Agri-Horticulture Society, began on Thursday. The show, which envisages to spread the message ‘a garden for your home’, will feature wide range of flowering plants from across the country.
The inaugural day witnessed public from various parts of district thronging the venue in large numbers to get a better scent of the bloom.
The show features hybrid teas, anthuriums, orchids, varieties of rose, different types of bamboo and medicinal plants and various other flowers.
An exhibition-cum-sale of new varieties of anthurium and gerbera from Pune-based KF Bio-plants is likely to steal the show in the coming days. The show includes a special exhibition of equipment by Anert on the use of solar energy.
The stalls put up by Malabar Botanical Garden and Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala will help public collect a better knowledge on medicinal plants and gardening.
The stall by Wayanad-based ‘Uravu’ features 50 varieties of bamboo.
Seminars and study classes on floral arrangements, anthurium and orchid cultivation, seminar on spices, medicinal plants, artificial flowers and bio-fertilisers will be held in the coming days.
Various competitions, in different category, will also be conducted in connection with the expo, besides seminars and entertainment programmes.
Mayor M Bhaskaran inaugurated the expo, which will continue till February 13.
