'More hydel projects needed'

KOZHIKODE: Electricity Minister AK Balan said the state, which is producing only half of the required electricity, needs to set up more hydel power projects to meet the present requirements.

He was speaking at the reception organised by Kozhikode city Corporation here on Saturday. He alleged that the stand taken by the State Government on the enactment of Electricity Act 2003 adversely affected the efforts to set up more hydel power projects in the state.

He also alleged that the projects like Athirappilly, which can contribute substantially to solve the crisis, were hampered as the environmentalists and the Central Government stood against the State Government's move.

The Government is aiming to generate 1000 mega watt power within 10 years, for which more hydel power projects are required, he added.

Earlier, Mayor M Bhaskaran submitted a memorandum seeking immediate action on electricity related issues.

Later addressing a press conference he said the department has reported PSC about the 2,000 posts left vacant in KSEB.

147 civil engineers in the department, who were suspended by previous UDF government, have been asked to rejoin.

“As many as 87 civil engineers have already rejoined the board, rest is yet to report at respective offices, he said.
