`Islam is against all kinds of terrorism'

KOZHIKODE: Syed Yusuf Hashim Rifee, former Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Kuwait, inaugurated the 29th anniversary and 13th convocation ceremony of Markaz Ssaquafathi Ssunniyya (Sunni cultural centre) at Karanthur, near here, on Friday.



At the inauguration, Mr. Rifee said Islam was against terrorism and its aim is to build unity among all human beings. Delivering the keynote address, Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran said imperialist forces were bent on destroying Islam by arraigning it as the accused in the name of terrorism. People of all countries should unite against imperialist forces. One should attempt to introduce Islam by scrupulously following rules mentioned in the Koran.



He said Islam never used force to make others accept its philosophy. Observing that education had become a thing being denied to the common man now, Mr. Premachandran said the Koran attached great importance to education. According to the Koran, education was as important as air for breathing.



Syed Ali Bafakhy Thangal, vice-president, Markaz Ssaquafathi Ssunniya, presided over the function. Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar, general secretary of the cultural centre; Syed Swabahudheen Rifayidi from Baghdad; M.P. Veerendrakumar, MP; M.V. Shreyamskumar, MLA; and K.K. Ahmed Kutty Musliyar, general convener, reception committee; spoke.



Earlier, hundreds of people participated in a procession taken out from Kunnamangalam to the venue at Markaz. Mr. Thangal hoisted the flag at the venue.



The three-day anniversary and convocation event, which began here on Friday, is witnessing a series of programmes. International religious leaders and representatives from various political parties are participating.



Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi will inaugurate an expatriates' get-together at noon on Saturday. Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim will be the chief guest. The former Ministers E.T. Mohammed Basheer and K. Muraleedharan will participate.



Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate a history seminar at 2 p.m. Minister for Forest Benoy Viswom and T.K. Hamza, MP, will participate. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy will inaugurate a minority conference at 4 p.m. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala, and P.P. Koya, Lakshadweep MP, will speak.



Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Muhammed Kutty will inaugurate the education conference at 7 p.m. An all-India students' meet will be held at 8 p.m. Delegates from various parts of India will speak on different topics.
