Kodiyeri denies visiting Kadampuzha temple

Kozhikode: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan yesterday denied reports that he and his son offered prayers at Kadampuzha Devi temple in Malappuram district.

He said such reports were circulated by his detractors. He said he was an atheist from the beginning of his career and he had not come up in politics by performing religious rites.

"I have not performed even the last rites for my mother who was everything to me," he added.

He was addressing the media after visiting Rafeeq, an accused in the May 2003 communal violence at Marad, in the jail here. The "false propaganda" was the creation of a section of the media, which had reported that a Shatrusamharam (annihilation of enemies) 'puja' was performed at the temple on his behalf.

Yuva Morcha State President K. Surendran yesterday asked the Communist Party of India-Marxist and its Democratic Youth Federation of India to make their stand clear on the puja performed by Kodiyeri.

The party had earlier warned Ayesha Potty and M.A. Monayi for swearing in, in the name of God. Two local committee members in Payyannur had been ousted for going on pilgrimage to Sabarimala.
