KOZHIKODE: Referring to the death of Roopisha at Vattoli in Kunnumel gamapanchayat in Kozhikode district in December, paediatrician A. Parthasarathy has said that no child has ever died on account of Tetanus Toxoid vaccine.
He was speaking at an interactive session at the Continuing Medical Education programme "Immunization Dialogue " organised by the Calicut chapter of Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) here on Sunday.
It was alleged that the schoolgirl had died after the administration of TT vaccine, but it was later confirmed that she died of Reye's Syndrome.
Dr. Parthasarathy, former national president of the IAP, said that a few incidents would keep the people away from taking vaccines for a short period. But they would ultimately realise that vaccination was the only way to prevent diseases.
He said that the world is all set to become polio-free. Only a few nations were lagging behind the polio eradication drive. A concerted effort had earlier helped to eradicate small pox from the world. Now was the time to take steps to eradicate polio. After its eradication the focus would be to eradicate measles, he said.
Dr. Parthasarathy said that research was being conducted on different modes of administering vaccines. Novel methods were developed to administer 25 antigens at a single time using patches.
