KOZHIKODE: The city dwellers, who are struggling to cope with skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, can now heave a sigh of relief, at least for a week, as Supplyco opened a special market on Sunday to make available groceries at a reduced rate.
The market is opened as part of the State Government’s initiative to check the price rise. At the special market, all groceries including vegetables are available at a price two percent less than the current prices at Supplyco.
The price of green gram here is Rs 35.75 per kg while its Supplyco rate is Rs 36.50.
However, its market price is Rs 48.15, which is unaffordable for the poor sections in society. Bengal gram is available here at Rs 27 per kg against its market price of Rs 41.50.
All major groceries including black gram (uzhunnu), red chilly and fenugreek (uluva) are available at the special market at reduced rate.
‘‘Vegetables and groceries are available here at rates two percent lower than current Supplyco prices. Since the market rates are high and unaffordable to common people we are expecting brisk sale in the coming days,’’ said K.Rajiv, the manager, Supplyco, Kozhikode.
He said that they are expecting all customers to make use of the facility as the price of some commodities are much less than the current market prices.
The vegetables available at special market include tomato, onion, chilly and shallots (small onion).
However, whether this lone special market for the entire district will help check price rise or to how many this will suffice is a million dollar question. Moreover, the special market will be functioning for just one week.
Spl market opened; just one in district, that too for 7 days.
