Police station computerisation hits a furniture block

T'PURAM: Computers, peripherals, software and trained police personnel are ready. Still, the police station computerisation programme is yet to take off. The reason is a bizarre one; there is no furniture to put the equipment on.

The State Government has diverted funds allotted by the Centre for purchasing furniture required for the computerisation programme. Owing to financial difficulties, the government is now unable to raise the necessary money.

46 police stations across Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode cities are included in the first phase of computerisation. A total of Rs 11 lakh is required for purchasing furniture for these police stations.

As a result of the paucity of funds, computers and peripherals that were supplied by the Centre, are now gathering dust at the police stations.

The police station computerisation that had been going on over the past several years had come across many hurdles. After postponing several times, the launch of the first phase of computerisation was expected in January.

Computers, two servers and other peripherals like printer, scanner and UPS were supplied to each police station last year itself. They were also successfully tested at the police stations.

Meanwhile, the government has given nod for the second-phase computerisation which covers Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kannur and Thrissur districts. Common Integrated Police Application, a software developed by National Informatics Centre, is being used for computerisation.
