KOZHIKODE: The Malabar Chamber of Commerce (MCC) and the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) said here on Monday that the Railway budget presented by Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad had many features that were "people friendly," but it was a big disappointment to the people in North Kerala.
Reacting to the railway budget proposals, P. Zakeer, MCC president, said the Minister had not proposed any substantial measures for completion of the ongoing work on doubling of the Mangalore-Shoranur rail line nor made any provision in the budget for electrification of railway line in this part of the State.
He said the railway budget was silent on the completion of work on railway overbridges in North Kerala and the funds needed to complete work to develop the Kozhikode railway station.
P.T.S. Unni, secretary of the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), welcomed the announcement by the Minister that surveys would be conducted for the proposed rail lines on the Thalassery-Mysore sector and Najancode - Nilambur route. "It gives fresh hope to the people of North Kerala," he said.
Conversion of the Thiruvananthapuram-Mangalore Maveli express into a daily service, increasing frequency of Kannur-Yaswanthpur express to thrice a week and lowering of ticket charges in superfast, sleeper class and air-conditioned coach would also bring cheer to rail commuters, the CCCI secretary said.
