Unique platform for gramophone lovers

KOZHIKODE: A gramophone club was formed in the city, may be for the first time in the history of the state, with an aim to provide a unique platform for music lovers across the region.

The members of the club are from Malabar region, including Kozhikode, Malappuram and Kannur, who still prefer to use gramophone to hear their favorite singer’s voice.

It was the fulfillment of a long cherished dream of many music lovers in the region for whom gramophone was the first love of their life.

“The idea of forming a club rushed into my mind when I came across a section of music lovers who still play gramophone to listen to songs. I then started collecting addresses of people who visit my shop to repair and buy spare parts of gramophone,” said VP Abdul Salam, organiser of the club and owner of the Voice of Kerala, the only existing gramophone sale shop in the city.

“Our aim is to enable the members to share their views and exchange ideas. It will also create an opportunity for them to listen to rare songs which they may not have heard earlier,” he said.

“Now we have nearly 350 active members. We are also planning to collect rare gramophone records from different parts of the state,” he said.

In the coming days, the club is planning to organise an exhibition-cum-sale of gramophones which will give a direct platform for the seller and the buyer. The club is also planning to organise a musical programme of old songs.

The members of the club also have plans to reproduce rare records after consulting with experts.

The members have designed a CD Gram, a multi-purpose gramophone which would enable the user to play gramophone, modern record player and tune to a nearby radio station. The club is planning to manufacture and market the CD Gram if the response for the product is good.

Music director and lyricist Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri inaugurated the Gramophone Club on Sunday.
