IT scales Kuttiadi heights

KOZHIKODE: What has hills got to do with IT? Or so one would ask noticing the feat of Kayakodi Panchayat Educational Society High School (KPESHS) in the field of IT studies.

With many a state and district level award for IT project, computer lab and IT school coming its way, the school is logging on to newer heights.

The latest of the honour to climb the hilly terrain was the best computer lab award among the aided schools in Kozhikode district. The school had won the award for second best IT school in the state in the IT mela held in Wayanad in November, 2006. ‘‘We consider the recent award as a silver jubilee-year gift,’’ says headmaster N K Asokan.

The computer lab in the school was established in 2002 with just four computers and the fund was raised from parents and the public. Now the lab has a total of 14 computers and two printers.

‘A study of the blood group and awareness of blood donation in Kayakodi’, a project prepared by a 10th standard student V Suhariya, won the best IT project at the state IT Festival 2007.

It is the second consecutive year that the school is winning the best IT Project award.

A study on ‘Problems and remedial measures for the plastic pollution in Kayakodi’ had won the award on 2006.

‘‘We are planning to post the names of the students, who are willing to donate blood, on the school website. The school will also bring out CDs of all subjects in the curriculum,’’ says the headmaster. A multimedia room, where students can attend virtual classes without teachers, is also in the pipeline, he added.

All the 10th standard students in the school have e-mail IDs which were created with the help of three coordinators of the School Information Technology. The results of the examinations are also posted on the school website.

The teachers at the school also have been winning awards in multimedia presentation at the state and district levels. The school has been the overall champions in the district-level IT festival for the past two years. ‘‘We are also doing our part in spreading awareness on the importance of IT in the area,’’ the headmaster said.
