Seminar to focus on prevention of cyber crimes

KOZHIKODE: A seminar on `Cyber crimes: detection and prevention' will be held at the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C) here on March 10.



Balram Kumar Upadyay, Commissioner of Police, will inaugurate the seminar being organised jointly by the Computer Society of India Calicut Chapter and Kerala State IT Mission as part of their initiative to make the computer-literates aware of cyber crimes and train them to detect and prevent such crimes.



Talks by Loknath Behra, Inspector General of Police, Hitec Cyber Cell, Thiruvananthapuram, on `Cyber Crimes'; V.K. Bhadran, Joint Director, CDAC, on `Cyber crime investigation'; Shyam Padman, lawyer, on `Cyber laws'; Nabeel Koya, CDAC, on `Digital signature' and Satheeshkumar S, CDAC, on `PDA and cell phone forensic' will be held during the session.



K. Anvar Sadath, Manager e-Governance, Kerala State IT Mission, will talk on the initiatives by the Government towards prevention and detection of cyber crimes in Kerala, K.P. Mohandas, Chairman, Computer Society of India Calicut Chapter Dean(PG) NIT-C, said in a statement.



The widespread use of computers in communication, banking, commerce and governance has led to a rise in the number of cyber crimes.



Starting with e-mail bombing (sending a very large number of e-mails so that the system cannot handle it), the cyber crimes take different forms such as financial crimes or `phishing' involving cheating, credit cards frauds, money laundering etc., cyber pornography involving production and distribution of pornographic material through computer networks, sale of illegal articles such as drugs and narcotics through cyberspace, on-line gambling, theft of source code of programs and valuable data through data mining, software piracy, copy right infringement, harassment through computer networks by cyber stalking and morphing of images, defamation, sending abusive e-mails and forgery of documents..
