Cracker shop catches fire in SM Street

Kozhikode: Six persons were killed and more than 50 injured when a major fire brokeout at Midayitheruvu, a busy commercial street in the heart of Kozhikode city. Many shops and business establishments were completely destroyed in the fire.



It has been reported that the locals noticed the fire at a cracker shop here around 10.10 am this morning and it spread-out to the nearby shops. The cause behind the fire has not yet been identified. Witnessess said that they heard two huge sounds of explosion around 9.50 a.m, before the fire broke out. It has been widely suspected that sabotage could have caused the fire ahead of Vishu season.



The Fire and Rescue Service and police are continuing rescue operations with the help of locals. Around 40 people have been admitted to various hospitals with burn injuries.Meanwhile, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has sought the help of Army and Navy rescue teams.



Moideen, Vineeth, Nishad, Abdul, Ganesh, Binoy, Manzoor, Thankom, Shabari, Nissar, Rajagopal, Bhavya, Mohammed Asharaf, Balakrishnan, Sajith, Afghar, Sagad, Nazeer, Vijith, Lubsheer are among the injured admitted in the hospitals. Police have not yet identified the dead bodies.



The Defence Minister A.K.Antony has also asked the Army and Navy to start rescue operations. Coast Guard will also take part in the rescue works, reports said.
