Micro enterprise study missing in MBA syllabi: Expert

Management of Micro Enterprises is a glaring absentee in the syllabi of MBA programmes all over the country, says V Mukundadas, Dean, IIITM-K and faculty IIM-K. However, Micro Enterprises topic is turning out to be one of three specific areas, where a managerial revolution is brewing up.

"A separate national institute for micro enterprise managment should be set up. It should also become part of IIM curriculum," Prof Das mooted at a national seminar on 'Changing Management Trends and Revival Strategies', organised by KMCT School of Business (KSB), Kozhikode.

The other two areas, poised to change radically, are IT enterprises management and rural marketing management.

In the wake of globalisation passing its adolescent stage in India, micro enterprises are the future. Better micro enterprise management, using state-of-the-art concepts and frame works, is emerging as a developmental priority, he said.

Emerging IT boom was another source of the forthcoming managerial revolution. "Indian IT enterprises are likely to reach their heights in 10-15 years," according to Prof Das. "Since these are relatively new to India, their management problems are not typical of those seen and studied in the manufacturing sector. New generation managers will have to take a different approach anticipating a paradigm shift tomorrow," he pointed out.

Another lacunae in Indian management studies is in rural distribution management. Based on 25 years of research in this area, Prof Das says, there is no fool proof rural distribution management model for Indian markets so far. "Indian rural market is not as homogeneous as urban market place. Competition between companies to earn success in rural markets depends on how well they can reduce distribution costs," he cautioned.
