T’PURAM: It was a proud moment for Keralites, especially the capital-ists, when the first IT park in the country, Technopark, came up in 1990. Nearly 17 years after, it was another remarkable event for the state on Thursday.

Technopark became the biggest IT park in the country with Chief Minister V.S.Achuthanandan dedicating to the sector the seventh building at the park. Christened ‘Thejaswini’, the 8,50,000 sq ft-building is also the largest building in the state.

Achuthanandan also said that his government would extend all assistance to those who come up with investments in the IT sector. The discussions on the Smart City project are in the final stages. The Technopark and Infopark are being developed further. Steps are being taken to set up a Technocity near Kazhakoottam and an IT park at Nedumbaserry.

National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) president Kiran Karnik, who applauded the development of the state in the IT sector, stressed the need for high-speed connectivity between Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. He also said that the state should become 100 percent e-literate at least by 2010.

Karnik said that the development of IT had generated around 15 lakh direct and around 6 million indirect employment opportunities. The IT sector is also contributing tremendously towards the economy of the country.

Marquee companies such as Infosys, Ernst and Young, SunTec, US Technology, Allianz Cornhill, Stock Holding Corporation of India and Office Tigers have already acquired space in the new building. The new building will house around 6,000 employees.
