T'PURAM: The Kerala government will seek financial assistance from the Centre to overcome the escalating prices of essential commodities in the state, Civil Supplies Minister C Divakaran said on Sunday.

Talking to mediapersons after inaugurating supplyco special fair here, he said the government would submit a memorandum to the Union government, demanding a share of tax remitted by the state for market intervention during such emergency periods.

Divakaran said to check the spiralling prices of essential commodities; the government had already stocked chilly, pulses, rice and coriander worth Rs 14 crore from Andhra Pradesh, besides procuring additional articles worth Rs 20 crore.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the first hyper market would be held here on February 22. Similar markets would be opened at Kochi and Kozhikode, he added.
