Water scheme to be expedited

Kozhikode: Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran on Friday said the State Government will take all steps to complete the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC)-aided drinking water project in Kozhikode district in a time-bound manner.



He was speaking at a review meeting of the project at the District Collectorate here. Mr. Premachandran said various committees headed by Ministers would be constituted to review the project during its various stages.



The multi-crore drinking water project will benefit 12 lakh people in the Kozhikode Corporation and the grama panchayats of Balussery, Nenmanda, Elathoor, Thalakulathoor, Chelanur, Narikunni, Kakkor, Kakkodi, Beypore, Cheruvannur-Nallalam, Olavanna, Kadalundi, Kunnamangalam, Peruvayil, Kuruvattur and Perumanna.



The total cost of the project is Rs.606.4 crore. It will be completed in August 2008. As much as 174 million litres per day of water will be pumped from the Peruvannamuzhi reservoir and purified at the treatment plant at Ponnmala.



Procedures for calling tenders for constructing wells and treatment plants have been completed. Land has been acquired for constructing 13 of the 20 new tanks. Various Government departments have pledged to provide land for constructing three tanks. Steps are also being taken to acquire land for constructing the remaining tanks. A centralised automated computer system will evaluate every stage of construction activity of the project.
