Corp seeks govt intervention

KOZHIKODE: The controversial land filling by a private group at the ecologically sensitive wetland at Kottooli, identified for the Tourism Department’s Sarovaram scheme, has finally led the city Corporation council to seek an immediate Government notification for the takeover of the identified land.

On a calling attention motion moved by CPM councillor M Krishnan, the council at its Saturday’s meeting, decided to ask the government to issue the notification, the first step towards acquiring a private property for a government scheme. Private owners will not be able to obtain court directions in their favour once the notification is issued, the council maintained.

A group of people led by DYFI, on Friday, had prevented the land reclamation works ahead of the construction of a hi-tech township in the area, a part of which fell within the land identified for Sarovaram project.

Mayor M Bhaskaran had already made it clear that the civic body was opposed to the Malabar Hi-lite’s project, for which the company had obtained sanction from the High Court, overruling the objection raised by the Corporation.

The government can freeze other construction works once the notification for land acquisition is made, which cannot be challenged in court, the council noted.

OPPOSITION STAGES WALK-OUT: The council witnessed a walk-out by the Opposition members after the Congress councillor PK Mamukoya was denied permission to present an emergency motion against the alarming price rise in the State.

The Mayor denied permission, citing a similar resolution in the agenda which was moved by CPM councillor P Divakaran.

Divakaran, in his resolution, blamed the Central Government for the escalating prices of essential commodities. “The Central Government’s wrong policies have almost wrecked the public distribution system. The Government should not allow futures trade of the essential commodities, to bring down the sky-rocketing prices,” the resolution said.

MEDICAL UNIVERSITY: The council, in a another resolution moved by councillor U.T.Rajan, urged the State Government to establish the proposed Medical University at Kozhikode Medical College. The Medical College here has all the basic infrastructure required for such a medical university, the resolution said.

Earlier, on another calling attention motion by CPM councillor Prasanna, the council decided to initiate steps to prevent ‘the practice of selling drinking water from private wells to hotels in the city’.
