KOZHIKODE: Enquiry Commission and Special Judge (Vigilance), Kozhikode, on Wednesday awarded six years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) to former president of Kariyodu panchayat, Wayanad, M.PMusthafa. He was sentenced to two-year imprisonment each under section 13 1(c), 13 (3) of Prevention of Corruption Act (PAC) and section 409 of Indian Penal Code.
However, the sentence will run concurrently. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the accused, failing which he will have to undergo nine months rigorous imprisonment.
The case was that the then panchayat secretary late C.Kesavan withdrew Rs 10,000 to construct a water tank and handed it over to Musthafa on October 20, 1993.
But, he kept the money with him for several months and finally bought low quality pipes. It was also charged that he tampered with the minutes of the panchayat meetings.
The court also awarded one-year RI and a fine of Rs 2,000 on T T Manojlal, sub-engineer, Electrical Major Section KSEB Kanjikode near Palakkad, under Section 7 and 13 1 (d) of PAC for taking bribe.
