Happy about new assignment: Zuberi

KOZHIKODE: "I am very happy to receive the offer," said Anwar Jahan Zuberi, the Vice-Chancellor designate of Calicut University, when asked what she felt about the offer.

In a telephonic interview with the this website's newspaper from Aligarh the 59-year-old academician said that she has not yet decided the date of joining.

A professor at the Education Department of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Anwar Jahan heard a lot about Kerala and Kozhikode through her friends and students.

"I have cherished the idea of visiting Kerala for quite a long time and have visited other places in South India, but unfortunately not Kerala," she said.

Anwar Jahan joined AMU in 1981 as a lecturer after completing her education at the same university. Qualified with a master's degree in English and MEd, she has been working in this Aligarh University till now.

She has also authored a few books. Before Anwar, Mariam Dossal of Mumbai University was offered the post but she refused. The government committee, which recommended the name of Anwar Jahan, took months to find an ideal candidate for the post.

What are her plans for the university? "It is too early to make any comments as I haven't seen the university or the state. First let me come there. I heard from my Keralite students and some Malayali friends that the University possesses a high standard in education and it enjoys a good reputation," she said.

Anwar is living with her aged mother in Aligarh to where she belongs and she is planning to take her mother also to Kerala.
