IIM-K to admit 15 in OBC quota

KOZHIKODE: IIM-Kozhikode will admit 15 students from the OBC category in the next batch of its flagship post-graduate programme, as a first step towards meeting the stipulated 27 percent quota for the OBC. The prevailing intake of students at the institute is 180.

This is the first time the IIMs have introduced the OBC quota, as a sequel to the decision of the Union Government to make OBC reservation binding on all premier educational institutions.

IIM-K admission chairperson P R Bhatt told this website's newspaper that the Ministry of Human Resource Development has not given any direction to the Indian Institute of Managements on the annual quantum of intake of students from the OBC quota.

Each institute has been given freedom to decide on the number of students to be admitted to fill the OBC quota, depending on the availability of infrastructure, including hostels and class rooms, and faculty strength.

"In fact, this year, the Ministry of Human Resources Development has exempted us from increasing the intake to meet the quota demand. Still we wanted to increase the number of admissions to meet the quota over a period of time." said Bhatt.

Asked whether the institute will hold special training for students admitted in the OBC quota, Bhatt said that as usual the institute would impart preparatory coaching for students who are weak in quantitative aptitude and communication skills.

"During the interview, we identify students who are weak in various areas. They will be given a two or three-week crash programme in areas where they are found wanting. They do not face any sort of discrimination on the campus," IIM-K admission chairperson P R Bhatt said.

Bhatt said that most probably there would not be any hike in the tuition fee. The faculty council and the board of governors have to take a final decision on this.
