Health Dept vows to make pulse polio a success

KOZHIKODE: Worried by the poor turnout for first-round pulse polio immunisation programme in the district in January, the Health Department has vowed not to repeat this in the second round slated for February 11.

‘‘Kozhikode registered a poor 68 percent turnout compared to the 90-100 percent in all other 13 districts,’’ said district medical officer K Damodaran. The poor turnout was due to the misgivings after the death of Roopisha, who was administered tetanus vaccine, which was later turned out to be due to Reye’s Syndrome, he told reporters on Friday.

All the other districts from Malabar registered more than 90 percent turnout in the first phase this year. Kasargod topped with 99 percent followed by Kannur and Palakkad (both 98 percent), Malappuram (95) and Wayanad (90). Pathanamthitta was the district which recorded 100 percent coverage.

Claiming that it has cleared the doubts and apprehensions on vaccination, the Health Department has made elaborate arrangements for Sunday’s pulse polio immunisation programme. ‘‘As many as 2,220 booths have been set up to cover a total of 2,64,959 children aged below five years. There will be 428 mobile booths besides 36 transit booths,’’ the DMO said.

As many as 4,440 trained volunteers under 442 supervisors have been deputed to administer pulse polio vaccine. Volunteers would make house visits on Monday and Tuesday to achieve maximum coverage, he said.
