KOZHIKODE: IG (North) M.N.Krishnamoorthi on Friday handed over Rs 3 lakh to Akash, who lost his legs following an accident involving a police recovery van on January 5.
Mahesh, father of Akash, received the fund, collected jointly by Kerala Police Association and Kerala Police Officers’ Association from city limits, rural, Malappuram and Wayanad.
Akash, a student of MCC High School, was seriously injured on his legs when an autorickshaw towed by a police recovery crashed on him, after the rope of the recovery van snapped, in front of Government Polytechnic, West Hill. He met with the accident while going back home from school.
Akash was first admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College and then shifted to a private hospital. Both his legs were amputated later.
Speaking on the occasion, IG M N Krishnamoorthi said this aid, pooled by police personnel, could be the first instance of its kind in the history of Kerala Police. ‘‘Van driver and constable, who were suspended following the incident, were responsible for the tragic incident,’’ IG added. City police commissioner Balaram Kumar Upadhyay and Town CI A J Babu were among those present on the occasion.
