MRI at Kozhikode MCH by May

KOZHIKODE: Formalities have reached the final stage for the installation of MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, the first one of its kind to come up in a government hospital in the state.

Almost two years since it received an administrative sanction for a fund of Rs 4.5 crore for the unit, the MCH here was eagerly awaiting an imported state-of-the-art machine to be installed at its new super-specialty block. The unit, which is expected to start functioning by May 2007, will be a blessing for poor patients across the Malabar region.

With the pre-qualification, technical and financial bids already opened, Wipro GE and Siemens remain in the race for the global bid. Among the three companies who fought tooth and nail for the tender, Philips got dropped first as its technical bid was found deficient in eight specifications.

Unlike in purchase of other equipment including X-ray and dialysis machines, MRI scan calls for a more detailed and complicated tender procedures, say sources in the technical committee. There are as many as 310 specifications to be complied with and the committee has to be on a lookout for mischiefs which could be played by the bidders in the race, sources point out.

The technical bid was opened on January 25 and the financial bid on February 3. But the committee is yet to finalise on the lowest bidder as it requires a detailed comparison of technical and financial bids to avoid any incongruities.

It is, however, learnt that the committee’s recommendations would be sent to the government for its evaluation by early March.

‘‘At present, there are at least 25 MRI scan cases daily which are being sent outside. We expect to attend around 40 cases here once the MRI scan unit is set up at the super specialty block,’’ said Medical College principal Dr P V Ramachandran when contacted. The scan, which would cost Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,500 in private hospitals, will possibly cost only Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 at the MCH.

The required amount of Rs 4.5 crore has already been earmarked from the HDS’ (hospital development societies) bank account which comes to Rs 7 crore at present.

‘‘This money is raised from poor patients and no fund from external sources is being utilised,’’ added MCH superintendent Dr Rajendran.

The Kozhikode MCH, on which patients from six districts of Malabar region depend, will take a big leap forward once it is equipped with this 1.5 tesla MRI scan with superconducting magnet, he asserts.

First to install among government hospitals in state, the facility will be a blessing to poor across Malabar.
