NITC youths Smart (dis)Connect net abuse

KOZHIKODE: Two young graduates from National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) have come out with a new software that can help institutions prevent the abuse of internet within their network.

Smart Connect Policy Server 1.0, an internet usage policy (IUP) enforcement tool, developed by K B Abhilash, a graduate in Electronics and Communication, and his friend Radhakiran Mohanti from Orissa, will help the operator define 'multiple URL allow lists' and make only required sites accessible to the users.

This cost-effective software thus restricts the students or employees from visiting porn sites, Abhilash and Mohanti claim.

''The prevailing method is to block the porn and related sites, where a person would still be able to visit these sites through 'anonymous browsing'. But the Smart Connect allows the operator to define the required lists of URLs in different computers under the same server and prevent 'anonymous browsing,'' Abhilash says.

Smart Connect has already been installed by a few institutions. ''When the software currently available in the market – Cyber Roam – costs about Rs 2 lakh, Smart Connect is priced at just Rs.20,000 to Rs.35,000,'' he adds.

Besides, this software allows the supervisor to set a time period for the use of internet so that the net connection will automatically be cut.

The new tool will be helpful to all who possess broadband connectivity – from software companies to educational institutions.

With regard to the hackers, they could easily be traced as the 'URL history' will remain intact in a computer installed with Smart Control. The unauthorised visitors will not be able to clear out of the 'URL history'.

Though installed in a few institutions including the LBS Engineering College, Kasargod, the software awaits its official launch, probably by the NIT director, soon. And Abhilash and Mohanti are thrilled at the encouraging reception to the software and expect a wide acceptance to this low-cost IUP enforcement tool.

Having obtained an engineering degree in Electronics and Communications, Abhilash is running 'Gamut Technologies' in the NIT campus.

He is all set to take the patent of the new software and an ISO certification in the name of his firm which enjoys the support of the NIT and National Science and Technology Entrepreneurial Development Board (NSTEDB).

''Studies reveal that an employee spends an average of two hours a day surfing internet sites which include porn sites. The new tool will enable the service operators to restrict them in wasting their productive time and energy.''

Settled in Kozhikode, Abhilash has set his eyes on developing new softwares that could further revolutionise the computer era.
