Plea to invest more for education

KOZHIKODE: The three-day Islamic Students' Conference which concluded on Sunday passed a resolution urging the Central and State Governments to invest more to strengthen the public education sector.

Time calls for appropriate legislation to prevent commercialization of education which is denying higher education to children of ordinary people, the resolution said. The State Government should sanction more institutions and courses in the aided-sector to create opportunities for students from backward and minority communities, it said.

Kerala Jem-Iyyathul Ulema chief advisor M T Abdur Rahman Maulavi inaugurated the concluding ceremony of the three-day conference which comprised 15 sessions. He called upon the students to be thorough on theories before putting them into practice.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahmed, who addressed the huge gathering at the Kozhikode beach, said the Muslim community made gains when it was clear-headed and behaved prudently. ''It's the responsibility of every Muslim youth to draw a clear line between prudence and sentiments. Knowledge is now being misused for selfish motives thus leading to disharmony,'' he said.

The IUML leader said that the Muslim community, though a bit late in grasping the relevance of education, 'was now marching ahead'. It should now react promptly to changes and should not turn a blind eye to the imperialistic forces in the academic arena which are creating divisions in the community, he said.

Ahmed said that a knowledge-based society required a wise leadership. Religion plays a big role at this juncture, he said. IUML treasurer P K Kunhalikutty and P M A Salam spoke at the function.
