KOZHIKODE: The efforts initiated by State Information Commission to sensitise the public on the Right to Information (RTI) Act 2005, seem to have borne fruit in the district, with applications flooding all departments seeking answers under the Act.
Statistics from government departments in the district reveal that applications are increasing day by day, giving a tough time to information officers in all departments.
Revenue Department has received 190 applications in 2006 and 20 in 2007 till date. District education office received 75 applications in the educational year 2006-07, while city Police Department received 39 applications in 2006 and 17 in 2007 till date. KSEB received 26 applications in 2006 and 8 so far this year.
Kozhikode Corporation, health, agriculture and irrigation departments have also witnessed considerable increase in the number of applications filed under this Act, while the Motor Vehicle Department has received only 16 applications in 2006 and 2007.
Figures reveal that the public have begun using the Act following campaigns conducted by State Information Commission across the district. However, the question remains whether it is possible for the information officers and assistant information officers to provide details within 30 days.
Under Right to Information Act, every department should provide information asked by the applicants within 30 days from the date of application. It is learnt that public have asked for details of even 50-year-old cases using this Act.
Since the government departments are yet to be computerised, the information officers are finding it difficult to meet the deadline
