Clogged drains won’t make a modern city

KOZHIKODE: Poor drainage continues to stare in the face of authorities even while efforts are being made to develop Kozhikode into a modern city.

With apartment blocks sprouting in large numbers, the drainage in city seems to be in doldrums. Lack of civic sense is also causing trouble as public have no qualms in dumping garbage in open drains. Result: Sewage/ rain water from clogged drains spilling over to streets.

For a clean city, the Corporation should make adequate allocation for constructing drains in its coming budget as many of the low-lying areas in wards 37, 44, 45, 46, 47 and 48 are getting flooded during monsoon. The situation in areas near Medical College are worse with life here turning miserable during rains.

Though funds were allocated regularly for the construction and maintenance of drains, the work remains inadequate. Whenever faced with a crisis, the Corporation shifts blame to Irrigation Department for not finishing the dredging of Canoly Canal.

The storm water drain on Mavoor Road from Arayedathupalam to Thondayadu, which falls in ward 45, is a project which should get immediate attention. Commenting on the problem, councillor Anitha Rajan said she had already invited the attention of the authorities to the need of a drain at Mangottuvayal.

Parayancheri area of this ward always get inundated during monsoon. Rajan, a resident Kottooli, said the Canoly Canal is the only channel to which the rain water can be diverted. ‘‘Once the authorities complete drudging work, the area can be saved from flooding.’’

Adv U T Rajan, councilor of Ward 48, said the area has four big drains connecting Canoly Canal. But the the local households are dumping garbage into it rendering it unfit.

The Central-aided Urban Infrastructure Development in Small and Medium Towns scheme which envisages construction of drains could be a solution to the issue.

Lagging dredging work in Canoly Canal seems to have become a hurdle for the Corporation to tackle the drainage issue. P T Rajan, Health Standing Committee chairman, said the mount constructed for dredging work should be removed that the storm water can be diverted into the canal during monsoon.

‘‘Corporation has warned the contractors that if they fail to finish the work on time they will face action,’’ he said.

Dredging should also be initiated at Muriyad, where the canal discharges into Kallayi river, he says.

However, putting entire blame on dredging work cannot be justified as many feel that Corporation should prevent flats from overburdening the drains in city.

Moreover, all open drains should be covered with concrete slabs that people do not dump garbage in it.
