Ragam '07 -Cultural fete at NIT-C from Wednesday

KOZHIKODE: Ragam '07, billed as one of the best inter-collegiate cultural festivals in South India, will be held at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C), campus, near here, from March 14 to 17. The theme this year is "Games of chance."





Ragam, started as a music festival in the late 1970s when the institute was known as the Regional Engineering College, has gained stature, attracting students from professional and arts and science colleges.



What make the event remarkable are the 2,000 students of the NIT-C, who form a strong cheering squad for the contestants. The event is noted for the organisational skills displayed by the future engineers.



Every Ragam edition promises to come up with surprises. This year, it is a performance by Shaan, playback singer, who will be rocking the campus.



Another highlight is a rock show by Evergreen, said to be Kerala's own rock band and the first from the State to be selected for the Independence Rock Competition. Chereo-Nite, bringing in some of the best college dance teams, also promises to be exciting.





Over 70 events


The festival has more than 70 events, Paul Joseph, Dean (Students), and Deepak Jose, general secretary of the Students' Council of the institute, told presspersons here on Saturday.



Prize money totalling Rs 1.75 lakh is to be won. Literary, dramatics, fine arts and speaking events are on the cards.



Dumb charades, what's the good word, pictionary, triple mash and creative writing comprise the literary events.



Speaking events include "just a minute" (JAM), extempore, block and tackle, debate and mock press. The senate debate and spelling bee are new additions. The fine-arts events include clay modelling, collage, pot and face painting, cartooning, JAM sketching, Rangoli and pencil sketching, Bijesh A.S., core committee head of the event, said.



The music and dance events include Antakshari, western and eastern orchestras, classical dance, duplicate and so on. Classical music is the new entry to this section.



Dramatics contests include mime, street play, mimicry and so on. English drama has been introducedthis year.



Enquire, the quiz club of NIT-C, will be conducting its annual college-level quiz.



Ragam '06 saw participation of 75 colleges.
