College hosting History Congress

FEROKE: Farook College, near here, will host the 67th edition of the Indian History Congress beginning on March 10.

Dozens of teachers and officials under the leadership of V. Kunhali, professor of history at Calicut University, have been working overtime to make the three-day congress a historic event.

Farook College is the first college to host the congress since it began in 1935. All these years, the congress was held at various universities across the country. The congress is being held in Kerala for the fourth time. The capital city hosted it for the first time in 1957 on the special interest of E.M.S. Namboodiripad. Calicut University hosted the Congress in 1975 and 1998.

This time, too, it was given to Calicut University after the original host, Kurukshetra University, declined in November 2006. But the inability of Calicut University and its History Department to host the event, helped Farook College grab the opportunity.

Irfan Habeeb, vice-president of the Indian History Congress, made Dr. Kunhali, who is the only professor of history at Calicut University, the local secretary and convener of the event. Dr. Kunhali was told to conduct the congress anywhere he found convenient. Dr. Kunhali's organisational skills had been appreciated in 1998.

No other college under Calicut University could match the initiatives taken by Farook College. The college management has mobilised all its influence and resources to meet the challenge of conducting the Indian History Congress for the first time on a college campus.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate the congress at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday. Calicut University Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi will release a souvenir on the occasion.

The congress is expected to be organised at a cost of Rs.17 lakh. While the Union Human Resource Development Ministry will give Rs.3 lakh, the State Government will give Rs.3.5 lakh. The Indian Council for Historical Research will chip in with Rs.1.10 lakh. The organisers hope to raise Rs.4 lakh through registration. They expect to meet the remaining expenses through sponsorships.

The Galfar group has offered to sponsor the bags for delegates; Kozhikode Corporation, Calicut University, Kannur University and Farook College management have agreed to host a dinner each.

As many as 1,200 delegates from across the country are expected to participate the congress. Though the registration fee is just Rs.450, the expense for a person for three days is expected to be Rs.1,500.

Many historians, academics and Vice-Chancellors from around the country are expected to reach the campus on Friday evening when the registration opens for the congress.
