KOZHIKODE: Calicut Ortho Alumni Association has urged the State Government to provide necessary infrastructure to the Department of Orthopaedics at the Medical College here.
Association said the department has been conducting knee replacement and joint replacement surgeries at a nominal cost for the last 12 years.
Better facilities at the department will be a boon for the poor patients, who cannot afford the costly service at private hospitals.
Total joint replacement at a private hospital will cost around Rs 1 lakh, where as the same at the Medical College will cost only Rs 10,000 for Indian implant and Rs 28,000 for imported implant.
Similarly, a private hospital will charge more than Rs 1.5 lakh for the total knee replacement surgery, while the same at the Medical College will cost only Rs 20,000 for Indian implant and Rs 55,000 for imported one.
Elbow replacement will require Rs 2,500 at the Medical College and shoulder replacement Rs 40,000, where as a private hospital will charge Rs 1.40 lakh for shoulder replacement surgery.
Association said the Medical College department has experts for all joint replacement surgeries. Kozhikode Medical College is the only government hospital performing anterior and posterior correction of scoliosis.
This surgery is also done at the Medical College for Rs 20,000, while at a private hospital the same will require Rs 2.5 lakh.
The association and Prof KP Surendran Memorial Education Foundation on Sunday held hands-on workshop on surgical techniques in arthoplasty.
Eminent doctors discussed about various joint replacement surgeries and the latest development in arthoplasty. Prof Ayisha Guhraj inaugurated the programme.
