Prof Kusuman dies in road accident

T’PURAM: Noted historian and former head of the History Department at Kerala University, Prof. K K Kusuman, 64, of Indeevaram, Padayani road, Maruthankuzhy here, was killed in a road accident at Kadakkal in Kollam district on Sunday morning.

His wife Usha and sister Lyla were injured in the mishap. Kusuman and family members were going to their relative’s home at Kadakkal to attend a function. The accident occurred around 8 a.m. when an over-speeding private bus rammed into the car in which they were travelling.

His body is kept at the mortuary of the KIMS Hospital here. Usha and Lyla were also admitted to the same hospital with serious injuries.

Kusuman started his career as a lecturer at the Government College, Vatakara. He had served as the Reader, Calicut University and Assistant Editor, Encyclopaedia. He had also served as the general secretary of the South Indian History Congress and president of the Association of Third World Studies.

Author of several books on Kerala history, including ‘Slavery in Travancore’, ‘Extremism in Kerala’, ‘Abstention Movement’ and the ‘History of Trade and Commerce in Travancore’, he had been working as the editor of South Indian History Congress Proceedings, Third World Studies Proceedings, Journal of Indian History and Journal of Kerala Studies after retirement.

Kusuman is survived by wife K M Usha (Reader, Government Law College), daughter Parvathy Rakesh and son Sreedhar. The cremation will take place on Tuesday at Muttathara SNDP crematorium, at 10.30 a.m.
