Women’s panel opens legal cell for widows

KOZHIKODE: The State Women’s Commission (SWC) has set up a legal cell in Kozhikode exclusively for widows, the first one of its kind in Kerala.

The legal cell will provide necessary guidelines to widows while dealing with property disputes. It would also bring respite to the widows who face domestic violence.

‘‘Widows are easy target of domestic violence as they are not economically independent. They were even denied their right to freedom of speech and expression,’’ commission member T.Devi told this paper on the sidelines of the one-day ‘workshop on widows’, organised on Sunday.

The cell will comprise Women’s Commission member T Devi, advocates K P Basheer, M S Saji and Vasantham, women circle inspectors, K K Lathika MLA, City Corporation development standing committee chairperson C K Renukadevi and heads of various departments.
