Time for NIMCET

The Master of Computer Applications (MCA) course is a much sought-after course nowadays.

The MCA course of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) is a prestigious one. The common entrance examination for MCA course, NIMCET 2007, conducted by the nine NITs, will be held on May 20. This year NIT, Durgapur, is conducting the examination.

The nine NITs conducting the three-year course are Calicut, Tiruchirappalli, Allahabad, Bhopal, Durgapur, Raipur, Surathkal, Warangal and Jamshedpur.

Eligibility

Candidates with 60 per cent marks (6.5/10 CGPA) in bachelor's degree of full-time three-year duration from a recognised university with mathematics/ statistics/ business mathematics as one of the subjects in any one semester/ year, both at the graduation and 10+2 levels are eligible.

It is for the first time that NIMCET is insisting that candidates who have 60 per cent at 10+2 level only need apply. For SC/ST candidates, the percentage of marks required is only 55 per cent (6.0/10 CGPA).

Those candidates appearing for final-year degree examination can also apply.

However, they will have to furnish proof of having passed the qualifying examination with 60 per cent marks at the time of counselling/ admission.

All 20 NITs in the country and Kolkata will be test centres. Candidates can download the application form and syllabus for the test and information brochure from the websites:

www.nitdgp.ac.in, www.mnnit.ac.in, ww.manit.ac.in, www.nitc.ac.in, www.nitjsr.ac.in, www.nitk.ac.in, www.nitt.edu or www.nitw.ac.in.

Completed applications should be sent to `Convener, NIMCET-07, NIT Durgapur, NIT Campus, Durgapur -713209, West Bengal ' on or before March 23 along with the application fee of Rs. 700 (Rs. 350 for SC/ST) in the form of a crossed demand draft drawn on State Bank of India, RE College Branch or any nationalised banks in favour of `Convenor NIMCET 07' payable at Durgapur.

Number of seats

There are about 480 seats for the course spread across nine NITs. The seats are likely to go up to 600 seats in order to cater to the OBC reservation stipulated by the Centre. Also, all the seats are likely to be made all-India ones.

A final decision on this would be known later. Last year, 8,875 candidates wrote the NIMCET. This time, about 10,000 - 12,000 candidates are expected to write the test.

Test pattern

NIMCET-07, like NIMCET-06, will have 120 questions. The test is of two-and-a-half hour duration.

Last year, out of the 120 questions, 40 questions were from mathematics, 60 from analytical ability (AAL) and logical reasoning (LR) and 10 each from computer awareness (CA) and English comprehension. (English comprehension was added last year).

This year, out of 120 questions, 40 would be from mathematics, 50 from AA and LR and 15 each from CA and English comprehension. Each correct answer will fetch four marks, with one mark being deducted for every wrong question.

According to those in the coaching field, a candidate should not waste one's time over any individual question.

They need to know which to attempt and which to leave. Shortcuts will help. Time should be devoted to each section based on the number of questions that section has.

Vector algebra and matrices are some areas that the candidates should be thorough with. Puzzles and non-verbal reasoning questions will be included in AA and LR sections.

Admission

The admission to all nine NITs will be through a Single Window Centralised Counselling/ Seat Allotment at respective NITs based on NIMCET-07 rank list in June.
