National Institute of Technology was established in the year 1961, it was called Regional engineering college, calicut (CREC) during that time. It was the 9th of the NIT's established. It was first affiliated to calicut university. The college started with a annual intake (seats) of 125 students for the under-graduate courses in the 120 acres of the campus. The intake was doubled to 250 from the year 1966 then the annual intake was reduced to 200 from the year 1968 as there was only less employment opportunists for engineers during that time. From the year 1990 there was a tremendous development in infrastructure and academics. It was then selected as one of the leading institutes in TEQIP programme funded by the World Bank. The ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, accorded the NIT status to REC calicut in the year 2002 along with other six REC's. After on that CREC is known as NIT or NITC , but the local people even now call NIT as “ REC ” as it is difficult for them to accept the change.
