NCDC plans rehab centre in Malabar

KOZHIKODE: In our society there are not many organisations working for the welfare of street children and the aged. National Child Development Council (NCDC), especially working for the welfare of children and child education in India, has been into this mission for a long while.

Now, Kerala chapter of NCDC, affiliated to Nehru Yuva Kendra, is coming up with an institution, Sneha Bhavanam, its first in Malabar, to rehabilitate street children.

This venture, likely to come up at Iringal near Payyoli, will be implemented with the help of individuals and institutions. In the initial stage, Sneha Bhavanam will work as a centre to rescue children from streets with the help of police. Children will be then send to Gandhi Bhavan, a rehabilitation centre run by NCDC at Thiruvananthapuram.

State coordinator of NCDC N K Kanakadas said the organisation also have plans to open an institution to protect orphans and the aged. ''NCDC will initiate drive against child labour and the mafia engaged in recruiting children for begging,'' he said.

''During a journey from Malappuram to Kozhikode, council members found five children, including a three-year-old, collecting waste from a railway garage. We brought them to the Gandhi Bhavan with the help of police. It was this that prompted the council to plan a centre in Malabar on the lines of Gandhi Bhavan,'' he said.

''There are many children on the streets. But few organisations come forward to rehabilitate them,'' Kanakadas added.

The council is now looking for individuals and organisations to join this venture, since it is not possible for the council to launch such a big project alone.

Initially, the children rescued from streets here will be send to Gandhi Bhavan. Subsequently, the NCDC will set up a full-fledged rehabilitation centre here which will provide food, accommodation and education to the children. The project has been submitted to the government to avail grant.

The NCDC has organised classes in various colleges in city to enlighten the young generation on the need for working towards the welfare of children and old people.

Individuals and organisations interested to join this initiative can contact NCDC over phone: 9249 242852/9447 626518.
