Novel features at flower show

KOZHIKODE: `A garden for each home' is the message being propagated through the Calicut Flower Show 2007, to be organised by the Calicut Agri-Horticultural Society at Swapna Nagari here from February 8 to 13.

The 31st flower show of the society, being conducted in connection with the 140th anniversary of the Kozhikode Corporation, has other novelties too, the organisers said in a press release here on Monday.

An added attraction at the show this year would be the exhibition and sale of new varieties of anthurium and gerbera from the Pune-based K.F. Bioplants.

A special exhibition of equipment by Anert on the use of solar energy for different purposes would be a highlight at the flower show this year.

The Malabar Botanical Garden will put up a stall that will project the medicinal and other properties of 500 endemic herbal plants of Kerala that were noted by Itty Achuthan more than 300 years back in `Hortus Malabaricus'.

A pavilion of the Wayanad-based Uravu will exhibit 50 varieties of bamboo and educate visitors on its commercial prospects.

Tuber crops and grain from Wayanad cooked and served in the Adivasi style would be another attraction. Besides a symbolic `poongavanam' to celebrate 100 years of Kumaranasan's `Veenapoovu,' a pavilion of the Kottakkal Arya Vaidyasala, rock garden, collection of medicinal plants, painting contest for children, seminars, and variety entertainments have also been planned. The entrance fee is Rs.10 for adults and Rs. 5 for children. For school students the fee is Rs.2.
