Work on JBIC water project to begin soon

KOZHIKODE: The work for the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC)- aided mega drinking water project for the city and the adjoining areas will begin within two weeks. The project is expected to completed by August 2008, said Minister for Water Resources N K Premachandran.



Briefing the media after a meeting with people’s representatives and officials from various departments at the Collectorate conference hall on Friday, the minister said the tendering for the project was completed except for the treatment plant. It also will be finalised soon, he said.



Government has approved five Japan-aided drinking water schemes in the state and the biggest one is in Kozhikode. The treatment plant to be established at Peruvannamuzhi will be the largest in the state. The pipeline which will carry water for 120 km between Peruvannamuzhi and Kadalundi will be of highest quality, the minister said.



‘‘There are disputes and cases over acquiring land for laying pipes. But in the first 40 km no such issues remains to be cleared,’’ he said.



The minister also informed that the Rs 606.4-crore project needs about 20 water storage facilities in various parts of the city. Out of these Kerala Water Authority (KWA) will provide land for 13. For three, land should be procured from other departments. For the rest government has to go for acquisition.



The project will provide drinking water to 12 lakh families in the city and 16 panchayats through 1,800-km long distribution system.



The Minister said revamp of the existing facilities also were included in the project and the KWA will be the supervising agency.



Dismissing concerns over the availability of water, Premachandran said it was scientifically confirmed that there would be no water scarcity in the project area.



‘‘We are planning to form ministerial-level coordination committee to monitor and assess the progress of the work. Besides, review meeting will be held in every month,’’ the minister added.



MLAs A.Pradeepkumar, P M A Salam, K K Lathika, U C Raman and various department heads attended the meeting.
